A moment of your time for membership

Our CEO, Chris Goldsworthy, has a message for all our members as we ask people to renew their memberships. Here he explains why he thinks being part of our Institute allows you to make more of an impact than ever.

"Of course he's going to tell me I should renew my membership", I hear you say! But please give me a moment of your time, because I believe our work to drive professional standards and help create a safe, inclusive, and sustainable sector is gaining real momentum.

Your membership is an investment in your own career journey. We give members opportunities to gain professional recognition, advance their development, take part in our mentoring programme, enrol in IMarEST courses,  and connect with marine professionals around the world.

Whether you are at the start of your career or an established industry leader, the support available through the IMarEST is second to none.

What's new for members

We are now helping more members gain professional recognition by reimagining and future-proofing our professional standards. This has included the launch of a new Technology' Register for our own MarTech, RMarEng and CMarTech programmes, as well as a hugely popular new Fellowship standard that has enabled many more marine professionals to achieve our highest accolade.

Another area we are particularly proud of is the launch of IMarEST Learning, our online platform, which is making it easier for members to learn, develop and upskill, whilst also providing a central place to record CPD. We have also been overwhelmed with support for our mentoring programme, from mentors and mentees alike, who say they continue to grow professionally through the programme.

This year has also seen the Institute strengthen our technical voice as we increase our influence at key international forums and facilitate conversations across a wide range of topics through our events and webinars. We continue to find opportunities for our volunteers to improve safety and sustainability across the global marine sector, and we are very grateful for their time and dedication.

Our community

For me, being part of the IMarEST community was extremely valuable during my own membership journey.

Before I became CEO of the IMarEST, I worked in ship management and spent many years at sea. Throughout my career, the professional connections I made from joining IMarEST branches proved invaluable, which is why building and supporting our community remains so important to me.

I am keen to see our branches grow and flourish, bringing people together to share knowledge, solve challenges, and shape the sector's future. This year, we launched our new Indian Branch, reinvigorated branches in Aberdeen and Nigeria, and opened a Foreign Non-Governmental Organisation (FNGO) Representative Office in Ningbo, China.

I've been lucky enough to travel to meet people in branches across the world. It’s been a privilege to engage with our amazing volunteers an members  at their local branches, as well as to witness the passion and expertise within our Special Interest Groups.

One thing that has stood out during my visits is our shared commitment to attracting and supporting the next generation of marine professionals. Through mentoring, volunteering and knowledge sharing, our members are helping to inspire the next generation of marine professionals.

Looking forward

I warmly invite you to continue your personal career journey with the IMarEST and to help us achieve our shared purpose. Your membership allows you to grow as well as helping us to uphold professional standards, and advance safety and sustainability across the global marine sector.

Thank you for your continued support, and for being part of our IMarEST community.
