IMarEST funded journey explores Rhine’s relationship with the sea

Ahead of this year’s World Oceans Day, we are launching a nine-part series by Hannah Muir, documenting her remarkable cycling adventure down the Rhine from the source to sea. Hannah was awarded our David Henderson Inspiring Journey Grant to explore the deep connection between one of Europe’s great rivers and the ocean.

‘My goal for this trip was to understand how positive action being taken on the river could also benefit the ocean.” says Hannah, who is a marine researcher, “I wanted to speak with local people, including engineers and scientists, about what motivates them to protect the river and hear about their visions for its future.’

The new series is a fascinating insight into the huge diversity of landscapes and ecosystems along the Rhine’s course. Over its 1200-kilometer course, the river flows from the pristine Swiss alps, through vineyards, into the industrial heartlands of Germany, and finally out to sea past the mega-ports of The Netherlands.

Hannah’s journey illuminates the life and communities of one of the longest river in Europe, diving into key issues such as fisheries, plastic pollution, inland shipping, and biodiversity. In depth interviews bring the topics to life, featuring perspectives from Marc Daniel Heintz from the International Commission for the Protection of the Rhine, winemaker Hanneke Schönhals, and Niels Kuiken, manager of the Haringvlietsluices in The Netherlands.

The David Henderson Inspiring Journey Grant, awarded biannually, honours the legacy of David Henderson, whose passion for exploration and ocean preservation continues to inspire new generations. It supports innovative journeys that inspire further public interest in the oceans and seas.
