Engineering Technicians contribute to the design, development, manufacture, commissioning, decommissioning, operation or maintenance of products, equipment, processes or services.

There are many routes that can be offered to meet this standard, including a combination of academic awards, vocational qualifications and experiential learning.

What do I need to gain EngTech?

Registrants at this level should have a Level 3 qualification as part of an approved apprenticeship scheme.

Applicants who do not have the recognised qualifications will instead have an individual assessment of their qualifications and any other relevant learning.

During the application for EngTech, registrants will be asked to demonstrate engineering knowledge and understanding, evidence of their contributions, and effective interpersonal skills. For the full list, view the Engineering Council's UK-SPEC standards document.

Marine Engineering Technician (MarEngTech)

Marine Engineering Technician (MarEngTech) is awarded by the IMarEST in conjunction with the Engineering Council register (EngTech).

This unique registration demonstrates that an individual has a particular marine speciality.

This is available to registrants for an annual fee of £32 after an initial fee.

Applying for EngTech

To become an EngTech registrant, applicants must have their competence assessed by the IMarEST according to the Engineering Council's standards. Members can begin the application process online here.

Not a member? Apply for EngTech when you join online as a member.

View our application support page for more information. Please note that Affiliates and Student members of the IMarEST are ineligible to apply for professional registration.

Standards required for engineers

The UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC), published by the Engineering Council, describes the value of becoming registered and explains the steps necessary to achieve professional registration.

It outlines the requirements that have to be met and the competencies that need to be displayed in order to gain these qualifications and gives examples of ways of doing this.

This document should be used to support a successful application to this registration.
