IMarEST launches Net Zero Framework consultation ahead of MEPC85
The Institute has launched an industry consultation on the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2023 GHG Strategy, focusing on the implementation of its short-term measures and the development of proposed mid-term measures. The outcomes of the consultation will help ensure the Institute's contribution to the ongoing negotiations reflects the expertise of its members, as well as the wider marine community.
Following the delay to adopt mid-term 2023 GHG strategy compliance measures in 2025, negotiations are set to enter a crucial stage at MEPC85 in November 2026. MEPC85 is expected to determine how the shipping sector implements the IMO's commitment to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by or around 2050.
This has led the Institute to seek a broad range of professional perspectives to help inform its approach. The survey will seek views on the effectiveness of current IMO GHG measures and the potential implications of developing net-zero policies for the maritime sector.
The IMarEST delegation has already played an instrumental role in supporting the development of the Net Zero Framework, the IMO's proposed mechanism to help international shipping achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
The delegation is led by IMarEST Fellow Professor Tristan Smith (UCL Energy Institute), with contributions from the Rocky Mountain Institute and support from the IMarEST Ship Energy and Environment Special Interest Group co-chairs Dr Thomas Beard (BMT) and Robert Farmer (Poten & Partners).
Commenting on the launch of the consultation Alasdair Wishart, director of technical and policy at the IMarEST said:
"Shipping has a vital role to play in global decarbonisation, and it is essential that the transition to net zero is both equitable and achievable for the sector.
"As negotiations move into a crucial phase, we want to hear from the wider maritime community. By bringing together the views of engineers, scientists and technologists we can help ensure the Institute's contributions continue to reflect expertise across the sector and support informed decision-making at the IMO."
He added: "Only by taking on board the views of the wider sector will we be able to fully represent the community and help identify a way forward."
The consultation will be open until 16 September, and responses are invited from individuals or organisations with a stake in marine decarbonisation. Participants may choose to respond to individual sections relevant to their expertise and experience or complete the consultation in full.
