IMarEST conference to address new era of maritime ethics

The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology is hosting its first Ethics in the Maritime Industry Symposium (1 July 2026, Southampton). Hosted by the IMarEST & RINA Southern Joint Branch, the event will bring together marine professionals to explore the human decisions, responsibilities, and impacts behind every voyage.

From the ship construction to seafarer welfare, maritime safety, and the emerging technologies, the industry is facing a brave new world when it comes to ethics. The event will bring together global professionals to examine these challenges and how the industry can respond responsibly.

“The key aim of the symposium is to discuss and highlight the wide range of ethical issues in maritime” explained Sue Harland, President of the IMarEST & RINA Southern Joint Branch. She continued “It looks like it will be an interesting and exciting day.”

Speakers from engineering, academia, and industry will lead discussions on sustainability, responsible innovation, and ethical leadership at sea. Notable appearances include a keynote from IMarEST President-Elect Claudene Sharp-Patel from Lloyd’s Register, Del Redevers from BMT, and Captain Ann Pletschke, with representation from over 15 other knowledgeable experts.

Jo Lewis, director of engagement at the IMarEST said: “Ethics in the maritime industry is a topic that is gaining traction and is also one that requires careful consideration. This event gives delegates the opportunity to step back, explore the issues, and return to their roles better equipped for this new era in maritime.”
