The IMarEST Scottish branch organises its first international symposium on “Maritime industry decarbonisation - The paradigm to achieve net-zero targets” aiming to discuss contemporary challenges within the maritime industry and stimulate the interest of scientists and professionals. Although the need to decarbonise the maritime industry is widely acknowledged, the pathways to achieve net-zero emissions targets are associated with considerable uncertainty. Stringent environmental regulations, volatile fuel prices, alternative fuels, development of emerging technologies, supply chain and infrastructure present both challenges and opportunities to the maritime industry. The UK and Scotland experiences considerable advances on decarbonising the maritime industry, whereas Scotland is still recognised as the thriving hub for innovation with plethora of paradigms.

The symposium brings together scientists, engineers, operators and professionals, academia, government, private and research institutions, as a forum for the exchange of contemporary ideas, techniques, methods, technologies, and best practices in the following areas: decarbonisation & net-zero targets, paradigms in Scotland and UK, sustainable technologies & innovation, sustainability challenges, policy & regulations, low and zero carbon fuels, UK ports, infrastructure and supply chain, human element and skills gap.

The events consists of a mixture of invited speeches, presentations based on abstract offers and a panel discussions on "Scottish maritime industry decarbonisation: miracle or utopia?"
