Registered Marine Technologist (RMarTech)

Registered Marine Technologists are characterised by their ability to act as exponents of today’s technology through creativity and innovation.

Registered Marine Technologists are professionals who harness, exploit, manage, use or apply marine technology in the pursuit of wealth creation and the provision of services in the marine sector.

Professionals with this registration are variously engaged in technical and commercial management and possess effective interpersonal skills.

The IMarEST is the only organisation in the world able to award Registered Marine Technologist to individuals who meet the criteria.

Why gain professional registration?

RMarTech registration ensures high and improving standards across all technological disciplines; it reflects best practice and is set at an internationally recognised benchmark level.

It encompasses high-calibre professionals in the practice, application and teaching of technology, and recognises the increasing focus on interdisciplinarity for the future of science, engineering and technology. Our standards are internationally well-respected and recognised.

What do I need to gain RMarTech?

Registered Marine Technologist is open to everyone who can demonstrate the required high-level knowledge, understanding and professional competence. The exemplifying educational standard is a Bachelor's ordinary level qualification in an approved subject, but there are many routes that can be measured to meet this standard; this includes a combination of academic awards, vocational qualifications and demonstrable experiential knowledge through work.

Technologists must undertake certain practices and behaviours in order to become Registered, such as:

  • Applying appropriate theoretical and practical methods to processes, systems and products
  • Providing technical and commercial management
  • Demonstrating effective interpersonal skills

For more information, view the IMarEST Registers Standards.

How is my knowledge and competence assessed?

To become registered as a Registered Marine Technologist, applicants must have their competence assessed by the IMarEST. Members can begin the application process online here. Not a member? Apply for RMarTech when you join online as a member.

The process of assessment:

  1. Online application to the IMarEST’s Membership Team: Claims to qualifications, experience and training will require formal documented evidence. In giving details of experience, applicants will need to show how this relates to the required competencies for RMarTech.
  2. Professional review interview: Following a review of the documented evidence, the applicant will undertake a professional review interview (PRI).  If deficiencies in the application emerge, the Member Panel will usually be able to suggest ways in which they can be addressed (this may involve further learning, training or additional experience).
  3. Review by our Membership Committee: If a candidate receives a positive decision on their application for RMarTech, they will become registered as a Registered Marine Technologist, and their details will be included on the Register of Registered Marine Technologists.

Retention of the designation will require continued membership of the IMarEST and payment of the required subscription.

View our application support page for more information. Please note that Affiliates and Student members of the IMarEST are ineligible to apply for professional registration.
