Seafarer Mental Health and Wellbeing

  • Overview

Mental health and wellbeing is a major area of concern with seafarers facing issues such as isolation, fatigue, and stress. However, small scale solutions and investments with regard to connectivity, food and social activities can make a significant difference to life on board.

As a member of the group, you will be part of a global community of marine professionals discussing seafarer mental health and wellbeing. The group aims to share insight and experiences with policymakers and businesses to support and initiate positive changes and promote the importance of addressing mental health.

The focus is on interventions and exploring best practice of implementation, monitoring results, and identifying what more can be done. There are opportunities to get involved with workstreams covering such topics as: reducing stigma, improving life onboard, resilience & wellness etc.

If you are interested in joining the group, sign into the MyIMarEST member portal and select the group from the list.

Until all seafarers are safe in enclosed spaces, our job is not done

On the Day of the Seafarer 2026, Alasdair Wishart, our director of technical and policy, highlights the ongoing risk to crewmembers from enclosed spaces. But says that until seafarers stop dying from asphyxiation, the job is not done.
