Chartered Marine Technologist (CMarTech)

The highest level of professional registration, Chartered Marine Technologists are characterised by their ability to make sound judgements in the absence of complete data to develop solutions to problems.

Chartered Marine Technologists are professionals, who harness, exploit, manage, use or apply marine technology for the provision of services in the marine sector.

Professionals with this registration deal with complex issues, both systematically and creatively and communicate their conclusions clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences.

The IMarEST is the only organisation in the world able to award Chartered Marine Technologist to individuals who meet the criteria.

Why gain professional registration?

CMarTech encompasses high-calibre professionals in the practice, application and teaching of technology, and recognises the increasing focus on interdisciplinarity for the future of science, engineering and technology. CMarTech registration also often means improved career prospects, higher salaries from employers and increased professional esteem, recognition and status. Our standards are internationally well-respected and recognised.

What do I need to gain CMarTech?

Chartered Marine Technologist is open to everyone who can demonstrate the required high-level knowledge, understanding and professional competence. The exemplifying educational standard is a Master’s level qualification in an approved subject. There are many routes that can be measured to meet this standard, including a combination of academic awards, vocational qualifications and experiential learning through work.

Technologists must undertake certain practices and behaviours in order to become Chartered, such as:

  • Combining general and specialist knowledge and understanding to optimise the application of existing and emerging technology.
  • Applying appropriate theoretical and practical methods to the analysis and solution of problems.
  • Providing technical and commercial leadership.

These are mandated by the IMarEST and represent the expected professional undertakings of a Chartered Marine Technologist. For more information, view the IMarEST Registers Standards.

How is my knowledge and competence assessed?

To become registered as a Chartered Marine Technologist, applicants must have their competence assessed by the IMarEST. Members can begin the application process online here. Not a member? Apply for CMarTech when you join online as a member.

The process of assessment:

  1. Online application to the IMarEST’s Membership Team: Claims to qualifications, experience and training will require formal documented evidence. In giving details of experience, applicants will need to show how this relates to the required competencies for CMarTech.
  2. Professional review interview: Following a review of the documented evidence, the applicant will undertake a professional review interview (PRI).  If deficiencies in the application emerge, the Member Panel will usually be able to suggest ways in which they can be addressed (this may involve further learning, training or additional experience).
  3. Review by our Membership Committee: If a candidate receives a positive decision on their application for CMarTech, they will become registered as a Chartered Marine Technologist, and their details will be included on the Register of Chartered Marine Technologists.

Retention of the designation will require continued membership of the IMarEST and payment of the required subscription.

View our application support page for more information. Please note that Affiliates and Student members of the IMarEST are ineligible to apply for professional registration.
