Seminar on Exploring Alternative Marine Fuels

A lively exchange of ideas underscored our shared commitment to a cleaner, greener maritime future.

The IMarEST Bangladesh Branch hosted a well-received technical seminar on 13 September 2025 at the Conference Hall of the National Maritime Institute, Chattogram, focusing on the timely theme of Exploring Alternative Marine Fuels. The event drew an engaged audience of around 45 participants, reflecting both enthusiasm and a strong commitment to advancing sustainable practices within the maritime sector.

A particularly inspiring feature of the seminar was the presence of eight Trainee Cadets from the 59th Batch of the Bangladesh Marine Academy. Their active involvement throughout the discussions brought fresh perspectives and underscored the importance of engaging young professionals in conversations that will shape the industry’s future.

The keynote presentation was delivered by Assistant Professor Minhaz Ahmed of Chattogram University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), supported by four of his colleagues. Their research highlighted the potential of Biomass-to-Liquid (BTL) diesel as an alternative marine fuel. The team presented findings on production processes, efficiency considerations, and the environmental benefits of adopting BTL diesel in the maritime sector. The presentation not only explored technical and economic aspects but also framed the discussion within the broader context of global decarbonisation efforts.

A lively Q&A session followed, with participants engaging directly with the research team. Thought-provoking questions from IMarEST members encouraged a constructive exchange of ideas and reflection on the practicalities of fuel innovation for the shipping industry. A Crest was presented to the keynote speaker, Assistant Professor Minhaz Ahmed, while cadets were gifted a selection of professional journals.

The session was chaired by Dr. Sajid Hussain CEng FIMarEST, with MarEngr. M. Obaidullah Ibne Bashir CEng FIMarEST, Honourary Secretary has conducted the proceedings. MarEngr. Harunor Rashid CEng FIMarEST offered closing thanks to the participants.

The seminar once again demonstrated the Branch’s commitment to knowledge-sharing, innovation, and professional collaboration. By bringing together experienced professionals, researchers, and cadets, the event provided a valuable forum for dialogue and inspiration.

The IMarEST Bangladesh Branch remains firmly dedicated to advancing marine engineering, science, and technology in support of a sustainable future for the global maritime community.
