IMarEST History Society

If you fail to learn from history, you're doomed to repeat it.

As technology develops, we often forget that the changes it creates may have been experienced before. The switch to alternative fuels in the industry, for example, has over two centuries been reflected in the change to coal, oil and liquid natural gas and possesses the same challenges.

The IMarEST History Society

This Society brings members together to learn from history and increase our shared understanding of the significance of historic developments in marine engineering, science and technology.

We do this by highlighting past failures and regulatory changes and other marine developments over the years, developing partnerships and sources to produce papers and presentations, and helping members to publish or present their work.

By highlighting the existing historic knowledge of marine history held by the Institute, we hope to not only encourage new members to join the IMarEST but to promote and enjoy history in it's own right.

Using IMarEST Connect

We encourage discussion on anything marine history-related on our IMarEST Connect area:

History: The hybrid merchant and naval vessels

The term hybrid has come into common usage, but pre-WWII and in the 60s/70s, it was applied to various merchant ship and naval vessel designs.
