New mental health scheme to support IMarEST members

Our partner charity, the Guild of Benevolence has launched a new initiative offering free and confidential professional counselling sessions for IMarEST members and their families. The sessions are being delivered by specialist clinical partners, Family Action (also known as Relate).

The Guild has introduced the initiative due to the high numbers of people in the marine world suffering with stress, isolation, relationship, or family struggles at sea and onshore. For instance, a stark reality highlighted by reports across the maritime sector is that one in six seafarers have experienced or witnessed bullying or harassment.

IMarEST members and their families can receive fully funded sessions for individual, couples, or family counselling, as well as other specialised therapy. The sessions are confidential, with all personal data held securely by Family Action.

Lizi Woodland, business development manager at the Guild of Benevolence, said: "We've long seen that people who come to the Guild of Benevolence for help are facing mental health problems as well as practical ones. The new scheme is designed to bridge the gap and ensure we can better relieve hardship in the global marine community"

To apply, IMarEST members can complete the secure form on the Guild’s webpage, providing their name, membership number, contact details, and the type of support needed. The Guild will then share a link from Family Action, who will reach out directly to arrange an initial assessment.

The IMarEST and the Guild of Benevolence hope this initiative will help break down barriers and stigmas surrounding mental health in the marine sector and help members enjoy more fulfilling careers.
